Time: 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Room: Morisset 212 NO BOOKS, NOTES, OR ELECTRONIC DEVICES ALLOWED General Instructions: Before you begin to write, read all of the instructions and all of the questions. Budget your time carefully. All questions must be answered in essay form. Write on alternate lines of the page (double-space).

3 ENG1121J Final Exam Point value of the exam: 35% of the final grade There are three sections Grade distribution Section A: 20 marks Section B: 40 marks Section C: 40 marks

4 ENG1121J Final Exam PART A — Sight Poem (20 marks) Provide a detailed analysis of the following poem. You may comment on such things as imagery, symbolism, speaker, diction, structure, tone, tropes, rhyme, and so on. Avoid merely paraphrasing the poem. Write your answer in essay form. DO NOT WASTE TIME ON REPETITIVE CONCLUSIONS. SIMPLY STOP WRITING WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF IDEAS.

5 ENG1121J Final Exam PART B — Drama (40 marks) Select ONE (1) of the following THREE (3) options and write a well-organized essay response. PART C—Poetry (40 marks) Select ONE (1) of the following THREE (3) options and write a well-organized essay response.

6 PREPARATION: POETRY Revise the concepts and terms we studied and be ready to use them for a poem analysis. Reread ALL the poems on the reading list (consult the syllabus). Try to remember something about each of them (a memorable image, the voice, a special trope, etc.). Think what you like and dislike, and why.

7 PREPARATION: DRAMA Revise the four plays. Make sure you remember the major events of the plot, central characters, setting, etc. Think about the plays’ genres. What makes a play a comedy/a tragedy/a drama? What is funny/heartbreaking/thought-provoking/cathartic in them? Try to remember telling details or even memorize a short quote or two that could be used for a variety of topics.
