III. Classification of Matter Matter Flowchart Pure Substances Mixtures Created by GBaker www.thesciencequeen.net

A. Matter Flowchart MATTER Can it be physically separated? Homogeneous Mixture (solution) Heterogeneous MixtureCompoundElement MIXTUREPURE SUBSTANCE yes no Can it be chemically decomposed? noyes Is the composition uniform? noyes

Do what? Physically separated- multiple substances are moved apart by physical means in which a chemical change doesn’t take place. Examples of techniques: manually parted, filtration, distillation, chromatography, centrifugation Uniform- Does the substance have the same amount of a different substance (s) through out the mixture. Chemically decomposed: separation where the parts are chemically changed where they no longer resemble the original substance. Example of technique: electrolysis

Mixtures Homogeneous Mixture (Particles are evenly dispersed throughout.) Heterogeneous Mixture (Particles are NOT evenly dispersed) LargeMedium ColloidSolutionSuspension Examples: Solution - Sugar dissolved in water Colloid - Milk Suspension – Soil Sample Size of the particlesVery small particles

What makes a solution? A Solution contains two parts: Solute- substance to be dissolved. Solvent- substance that does the dissolving. The amount of solute the Solvent can dissolve is the Solubility.

Mixtures Mixtures Homogeneous Solution very small particles particles don’t settle EX: rubbing alcohol

Mixtures Mixtures Heterogeneous- colloids medium-sized to large-sized particles particles may or may not settle EX: milk

Mixtures Mixtures Heterogeneous-Suspension Larger sized particles particles will eventually settle EX: muddy water

Pure Substances Pure Substances Element composed of identical atoms EX: copper wire, aluminum foil

Pure Substances Pure Substances Compound composed of 2 or more elements in a fixed ratio properties differ from those of individual elements EX: table salt (NaCl)

Mixtures Mixtures Examples: 1. tea 2. muddy water 3. Fog 4. Hydrogen peroxide 5. saltwater 6. Italian salad dressing 7. Lemon juice 8. Gold Answers: 1. Homogeneous - Solution 2. Heterogeneous - Suspension 3. Heterogeneous- Colloid 4. Pure substance - Compound 5. Homogeneous - Solution 6. Heterogeneous - Suspension 7. Heterogeneous – Colloid 8. Pure substance - Element
