9/14/15 Introduce Entry/Exit procedures My Expectations Syllabus review Classroom Tour SAVE SAM activity Set up notebooks (Finish Tuesday)

Daily Entry and Exit Tasks – to learn and assess your progress towards standards: Enter quietly, gather your supplies, and be seated before the bell rings. Answer the question(s) from the board on your Entry Task Sheet. You may help each other with the entry task. We will discuss and you should copy answers you did not have. Last 5 minutes for exit task. You may not help each other or ask me. This is to assess how well you understood the material of the day. You will “trade and grade” during Exit Task most Fridays. The grader’s signature verifies they graded honestly! Entry task and exit task are worth 20 points per week. Turn in your entry/exit task answer sheet on FRIDAY each week. If absent, look on my website to complete these tasks.

9/14/15 Entry Task Find Ms. Maring’s expectations poster. Describe location. NOTE: during exit task time, I will be checking that you brought your supplies.

Classroom tour Blue lines Emergency panel and fume hoods Turn in trays Crates with copies – best to check my website. Lab Stations - #1-8 NO NAME baskets – add name, turn it in. Eyewash and Fire extinguisher and exit door Performance Expectations on board

Only You Can Help Save Sam! Sam has been spending his summer boating on the great lakes. However, he’s not too bright (after all, the brains of worms are pretty small). He’s never learned how to swim, and he never wears his life preserver. The worst has happened! His boat has capsized and he’s stuck! Fortunately, his life preserver is in the boat, but unfortunately he does not know how to reach it without falling off and drowning. Use the Scientific Method to solve the problem… How can you and your partner save Sam using only 4 paper clips. You may not touch Sam, the boat, or the life preserver directly with your hands.

Saving Sam Materials: Gummy Worm Gummy “Life Saver” preserver 1 Plastic Cup 4 Paper Clips Your task: – Work with your partner and "Save Sam". – Follow the rules. Sam, the boat, the life preserver can be touched only with the paper clips. NO HANDS.

On a piece of notebook paper… – Develop a data section that includes Diagrams of how you saved Sam A detailed procedure your steps to success. – Analyze and conclude the experiment. – Tell me about the difficulty of the task – what other strategies you and your partner worked on before you succeeded – and what you think the critical steps were for solving this problem.

Exit Task Instructions Last 5 minutes for exit task. You may not help each other or ask me. This is to assess how well you understood the material of the day. When you have an answer written down, raise your hand and I will come stamp your paper. OUR FIRST EXIT TASK is very low stakes – you cannot get it wrong unless you refuse to do it All the rest will be based on the standards you will be meeting this year

9/14/15 Exit Task Did you bring your materials? List what you brought here. REMINDER: signed syllabus due Friday, Sept 18 th.

9/15/15 Entry Task Describe 3 important safety procedures in the science lab. REMINDER - get syllabus signed by Friday.

Safety HOMEWORK Rules #1-53 and Contract Safety Cartoon – RIGHT SIDE – For each of the numbers on the cartoon, write down the RULE # which was violated. LEFT SIDE – http://expedioscientiam.net/school/resources/wh at_not_to_do_600.pdf http://expedioscientiam.net/school/resources/wh at_not_to_do_600.pdf – TRY TO USE EACH RULE AT LEAST ONCE!!!

9/15/15 Exit Task Is horseplay a good activity in the science lab classroom. Why or why not? SYLLABUS and SAFETY CONTRACTS DUE FRIDAY SEPT 18!!!

9/16/15 Entry Task Describe location and important aspects of 3 safety features in the classroom. Finish your safety cartoon as homework – due start of class tomorrow for TRADE AND GRADE.

Today’s Agenda Work time safety cartoon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V- fNpaOX0-g Flinn Safety Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V- fNpaOX0-g Raise hand at each rule violation – give rule # and what went wrong. REVIEW FOR QUIZ Last 10 min SAFETY QUIZ.

9/16/15 Exit Task NO exit task…we are taking a SAFETY QUIZ! SAFETY CONTRACTS DUE FRIDAY SEPT 18!!!

9/17/15 Entry Task What is the unit of METRIC measurement for MASS? VOLUME? DISTANCE? How is metric different than the American system of measuring? Would anyone like to bring back the textbook and do the ONLINE version? Take out safety cartoon. Trade and Grade. If they have one rule # per cartoon # = 1 point.

Today’s Agenda Notes on Measuring and Metric How to Graph using variables. Make a graph using given data.

Metric System, Measuring and Graphing Please take notes on the next RIGHT side page in your COMP BOOK

The International System of Measurement a.k.a The Metric System or SI A system of measurement based on multiples of 10 Measurements include a prefix and base unit Base units in the SI system include: – Length in meters – volume in liters – mass in grams The prefix refers to a multiple of ten

Prefixes Kilo (k) = 1000 (1 kilogram (kg) is about the mass of a russet potato) Hecto (h) = 100 Deka (dk) = 10 Base unit = 1 (1 gram (g) is about the mass of a paperclip) Deci (d) = 1/10 or 0.1 Centi (c) = 1/100 or 0.01 Milli (m) = 1/1000 or 0.001 (1 milliliter of water would fill a 1cmx1cmx1cm cube) --- Micro (µ) = 1/1,000,000 or 0.000001 --- Nano (n) = 1/1,000,000,000 or 0.000000001

KILO 1000 Units HECTO 100 Units DEKA 10 Units DECI 0.1 Unit CENTI 0.01 Unit MILLI 0.001 Unit Meters Liters Grams CONVERTING with the Ladder Method How do you use the “ladder” method? 1 st – Determine your starting point. 2 nd – Count the “jumps” to your ending point. 3 rd – Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction. 4 km = _________ m 1 2 3 How many jumps does it take? Starting Point Ending Point 4. 1 __. 2 3 = 4000 m

Common units of measurements (equipment to use)-- Mass: g, kg (triple beam balance or scale) Distance: mm, cm, m, km (ruler or meter stick) Volume: ml, L, cm 3 (graduated cylinder) Temperature: ºC, ºF, Kelvin (thermometer) Time: seconds, minutes, hours (stop watch) = most common

best answer is around 2.63 cm to a scientist this number means “between 2.60 and 2.70 cm.” the last digit, 3, representing the smallest amount, is uncertain, but it is still significant always “push it” one more decimal place by estimating Your calculator answer should have the same number of places as the problem

256.15 g

124.465 g

52.6 ml

Data Table Format Condition(levels of the MV) Trial 1Trial 2Trial 3Average (averaged results of the RV) Experimental Control Condition Condition 1 Condition 2 Condition 3

GRAPHS Make a bar or line graph of your results. MV – conditions become the X-axis RV – results of the trials, usually the averages only become the Y-axis. Manipulated Variable Responding Variable

Graphs need… TITLE MV vs RV Label the axes All increments even with numbers labeled RV on Y axis. Label “Average Number of Surviving Giardia Cysts” MV labeled with words or numbers on axis. Tops of bars labeled with “height” (y value) Make it as big as possible

Graph this on the graph paper! Number of Surviving Giardia Cysts TEMPERATURE OF WATER (C) Trial 1Trial 2Trial 3Average (averaged results of the RV) Experimental Control Condition 22 (room temp) 20 1920 402322 501121 1000000

9/17/15 Exit Task On which axis does the MANIPULATED VARIABLE belong? On which axis does the RESPONDING VARIABLE belong? SYLLABUS and SAFETY CONTRACTS DUE FRIDAY SEPT 18!!!

9/18/15 Entry Task Say Something Nice TURN IN SYLLABUS and SAFETY CONTRACTS!!!

Today’s Agenda Review graphs Review “Plan an Investigation” sheet Label things as directed on the lab sheet “Amount of CaCl2 vs Temperature of Water” Begin Pre-Lab Planning (answer the questions on a left side page) Equipment Review – how to use triple beam balance to measure mass; graduated cylinders for liquid volume; thermometers for Celsius temperature Check out a laptop with partner. http://www.ohaus.com/input/tutorials/tbb/tbbentry.swf Do the “Use Tutorial” and “Practice Weighing.” http://www.ohaus.com/input/tutorials/tbb/tbbentry.swf
