1-6 Subtracting Integers Warm Up Describe in words how you solved #2 1. –7 + 24. –6 + (–28) 2. –12 + (–9) 5. 104 + (–87) 3. 32 + (–19) 6. –18 + (–24) Homework- Page 28 # 1-16 all, #19-28 all, #30-42 all (quiz on adding and subtracting integers tomorrow- will need to list steps for + and – integers in detail) –5–34 17 –42 –21 13

1-6 Subtracting Integers Example 1- I Do A. –7 – 4 B. 8 – (–5) C. –6 – (–3) Subtract. D. 14 – (18)

1-6 Subtracting Integers Example 2- You Do (A) (B) (C) –7 – j for j = -8 Evaluate. (D) 7 – t for t = 6 a – 7 for a = –9 8 – j for j = –6

1-6 Subtracting Integers The distance from the high dive to the swimming pool is 10 feet. The pool is 12 feet deep. What is the total distance from the high dive to the bottom of the pool? Example 3 – I Do 10 – (–12) Combine Signs next to each other. 10 + 12Same signs add 22 Take the sign of the larger number. It is 22 feet from the diving board to the bottom of the pool.

1-6 Subtracting Integers The top of the Sears Tower in Chicago, is 1454 feet above street level, while the lowest level is 43 feet below street level. How far is it from the lowest level to the top? Example 4 – You Do 1454 – (–43) Combine signs next to each other 1454 + 43 Same signs add 1497 Take the sign of the larger number. It is 1497 feet from the lowest level to the top.
