The Decision and Policy Analysis Program

Our vision We strongly believe in the power of information for making better decisions about agricultural and natural resource investments, from the farm- to the global- level. Numbers. Maps. Graphs. Insights. Better public and private policies

Our modus operandi Thematically diverse, united by spatial, economic and institutional analysis Converting data to information to policy and decision insights Demand-driven by other CIAT programs and partners needs in Latin America Eco-efficiency as a guiding principle

Our themes Output 1: Impact assessment for targeting, documenting and increasing the effectiveness of research and development Output 2: Policy guidelines, tools and innovations for managing ecosystem services to the benefit of the rural poor Output 3: Estimated impacts of climate change on agricultural systems, and identification of adaptation pathways for the rural poor Output 4: Policy guidelines and innovations to ensure pro-poor and equitable supply chains in the face of a highly dynamic world

Facilitating Impact Decision and Policy Analysis: Targeting, facilitating, assessing impact. Three entry points: 1.Capacity strengthening 2.Monitoring and evaluation 3.Participatory communication

Examples of Interventions Design and set up of a CIAT capacity strengthening platform. Development of participatory impact pathways (PIPA methodology): CPWF, CIAT projects. Use of social media to enhance stakeholder engagement: DAPA/CIAT, ICT-KM Program, GCARD2010.

Is soybean or pasture expansion the key driver of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon? Agricultural expansion Soybean versus Pasture Data at municipality level for the entire Amazon for 2000-2006 Census/Survey from IBGE Estimated annual pasture (based on livestock data) Deforestation from INPE Relationship between agricultural expansion and deforestation Spatial patterns, statistical relationship, and potential spatial shift in land use cover were analyzed over the period 2000-2006 McGill University in Canada and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) Published Environmental Research Letters: The role of pasture and soybean in deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon (2010 ) Main findings Consistent with other studies, soybean expansion is replacing pasture areas However, soybeans may have displaced pasture further north into the forest areas, causing indirect deforestation there. Even if the proximate cause of deforestation were mainly ranching, it is likely that soy cultivation is a major underlying cause

http://gismap.ciat.cgiar.org/IAViewer/ Web-based GIS to support policy and program development for the Amazon Amazon Initiative and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)

Poverty Mapping International Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) First developing country map of subnational poverty at one and two dollars per day Work commissioned by the CGIAR strategy and results framework (SRF) team

Climate change at DAPA 1.DAPA contributes to the world by: 1.Processing and providing downscaled future climate data 2.Assessing impacts on agricultural systems (Colombia, Andean, Central America, Globally…) 3.Assessing impacts on biodiversity and conservation 4.Policy briefs and summaries to facilitate policy making processes…
