Electricity and Magnetism

What Do You Think? Using a T-Chart, write down everything you know about electricity and magnetism Electricty Magnetism

For You To Do, Part 1 Touch the wires to the battery as shown in the picture, do not attach the wires to the battery. Place the compass in 3 positions along the wire and observe the interaction.

Please write… 1. Describe what happens to the compass as you move it along the wire? 2. Describe what the compass is detecting.

Move the compass Move the compass to 3 positions around the wire (not touching it) Observe what is happening to the compass

3. Describe what is happening to the compass now and how it is different from the compass movements when the wire was touching it. 4. Describe what the compass is now detecting

For You To Do, Part 2 Observe the pattern (if any) of the sprinkled iron filings on the overhead transparency. 5. Write down what happens when the magnet is placed under the iron filings

For You To Do, Part 2, continued 6. Draw a picture of the iron filings and the magnet 7. Describe what the iron filings are detecting. 8. Name what you have just described.

For You To Do, Part 3 Using the supplies given (magnet, coil of wire, galvanometer), to create an electric current that can be measured with the galvanometer Draw your successful setup and explain in writing what happened Describe the relationship between a magnet and electricity

For You To Do, Part 4 Using the supplies given (nail, wire, battery, paper clips), make a magnet Draw your successful setup and explain in writing what happened Describe the relationship between the battery (electricity) and the nail (magnetized)

For You to Do, Part 5 Watch the demo of the balloon and the wall Watch the demo of the tape

What is happening on the atomic level? On the ‘before; picture: draw 10 electrons on each object On the ‘after’ picture: draw the new location of these 20 electrons

What is happening on the atomic level? On the ‘before; picture: draw 10 electrons on each object On the ‘after’ picture: draw the new location of these 20 electrons

What is happening on the atomic level? On the ‘before; picture: draw 10 electrons on each object On the ‘after’ picture: draw the new location of these 20 electrons
