25 1. Ingestion Food must be placed into the mouth before it can be acted on. Active, voluntary process

26 2. Propulsion In order for food to be processed by different organs, they must be propelled from one organ to the next. Example: Swallowing – depends on the propulsive process called peristalsis Peristalsis – involuntary and involves alternating waves of contraction and relaxation of the muscles in the organ walls

27 3. Food Breakdown – Mechanical Digestion
Mixing of food in the mouth by the tongue Churning food in stomach Segmentation – propels foodstuffs through the small intestine Prepares food for further degradation by enzymes

Sequence of steps which large food molecules are broken down to their building blocks by enzymes

29 5. Absorption Transport of digested end products from the lumen of the GI tract to the blood or lymph For absorption to occur, digested foods must first enter the mucosal cells by active or passive transport processes Small intestine is major site of absorption

Neural: Stretch receptors to medulla oblongata Sympathetic nerves to stomach cause: Decreased stomach movement & increase contraction of pyloric – bottom – sphincter (delays stomach emptying) Hormonal: Cholecytokinin (CCK): stimulates pancreatic juice/squeezes gallbladder
