11 My mind for the mind of Christ
Beauty For Ashes What kinds of things take your mind and eyes off of God and put them on yourself? Think about relationships, what others think of you, getting critical of yourself, getting depressed or discouraged, or giving in to self-pity. Once we start looking inward and becoming absorbed with our own self and our own thoughts, it becomes more and more difficult to turn our eyes back to God. We have to catch the first prideful, depressing, or critical thought and take it captive and make our thoughts obedient to Christ. The following in from a Psalm about a man who started getting discouraged and depressed about his own life when he compared it to the lives of those who did not serve the Lord. Lesson 4 My mind for the mind of Christ Philippians 2:5

12 Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: (KJV) Philippians 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus. (NASB)

13 My Mind for the Mind of Christ How?

14 A Mind Set on the Flesh…. Sets Self above God Sets Self above Others
21 When my heart was embittered and I waspierced within, 22 Then I was senseless and ignorant ; I was like a beast before You. Psalm 73:21,22 Sets Self above Others 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish Ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. James 3:14,15 Sets Self above God When we give in to depression, bitterness, self-pity, sadness, or discouragement, we are basically setting ourselves and our feelings above God, who tells us to rejoice in the Lord always and to give thanks in all things. When we look to Jesus, we remember that He has overcome the world, that He is God, and that there is no situation bigger than His power. But if we take our eyes off of Him and start looking inward, becoming overly analytical and critical, and turning too introspective, our whole perception becomes skewed and shaky. Placing self above God is basically pride and idolatry, and these things are sin in the eyes of God. Sets Self above Others Sometimes we place ourselves above others, choosing to be critical, prideful, arrogant, bitter, selfish, envious, indifferent, or even aloof. James says that even though we can sometimes appear wise or intellectual by doing these things, we are not walking in godly wisdom, but worldly wisdom, which is of the devil. Our example should come from Jesus, who, even though He is God, came down to earth as a baby to associate with, love, and save those who were rebellious and sinful.

15 Experiences victory through Christ
A Mind Set on God…. Dies to self 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:2-3 Experiences victory through Christ This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. I John 1:5 Dies to self Jesus layed down His life for us, and even though He was God, He allowed Himself to be beaten and crucified out of love for the Father and for God’s people. If we claim to know Him and love Him, we must also die with Him. Once we have crucified our flesh with Christ, we allow Him to live in us, and we have His mind operating in us. There is no room for selfish, self-indulging, self-condemning, or self-pitying thoughts. All our thoughts are to be fixed on Him, the author and perfecter of our faith. Experiences victory through Christ How can we overcome selfish tendencies? Believe in Jesus! He has overcome all sin, all depression, all discouragement, all selfishness, and He lives in us! Jesus died and rose again; He is alive and defeated death! Because of the grace we receive through our faith in Him, we, too, can overcome destructive thoughts and tendencies! We have victory in His name!

16 How to renew your mind…. Put off the old Put on the new
Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. Colossians 3:5 Put on the new So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience ; Col. 3:12 Put your focus on Jesus fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith Hebrews 12:2 Puts off the old First, we must cast off every thought that is not of God. These may be outright sinful thoughts, or they may simply be thoughts that we spend too much time on and allow ourselves to be distracted from devotion to Jesus. This verse implies that anything that is of our earthly nature is idolatry, because when we continue in sinful actions or thoughts, we are placing those desires above God, which is idolatry. Jesus must have the preeminence in our minds. Puts on the new When we start serving God and other people, we stop thinking so much about ourselves. As we walk in compassion, kindness, and humility, we start thinking about how we can demonstrate God’s love to other people and how we can be a blessing to them. Simply doing good deeds is not a substitution for a personal relationship with Jesus or spending time in His presence, but as we spend time with Him, His love and compassion will begin to shine through us as we go out and serve others in love. Put your focus on Jesus When we hang out with Jesus and spend undistracted time with Him, we can give to Him all those tormenting critical, depressing, or selfish thoughts and just be with Him. He loves us no matter what and wants to clean out all the junk in our minds that keeps us from being fully alive in Him. Jesus had many opportunities to get discouraged or bitter or just plain depressed, but He knew that true joy came in obeying the Father and seeing His people restored to a right relationship with Him. As we look to Him, we will become more like Him and it will get easier and easier to think like Him.

17 The Mind of Christ Is a Submissive Mind
6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, Phil 2:6 Is a Submissive Mind The mind of Christ is not a self-centered mind. It is not a stubborn mind; rather it is a mind of surrender and submission. Christ was submissive to the will of God the father. He was a “lamb slain from the foundation of the world” according to the book of revelation. He knew that the eternal purpose of God the father was for him to robe himself in humanity and become the sacrifice that would procure salvation for fallen man. He never one time argued with God the father concerning his eternal purposes; rather he was submissive to the will of God for his life. How submissive are we to the will of God? The measure of our submissiveness will always be in measure to the amount of the mind of Christ that we possess.

18 The Mind of Christ Is a self-abased Mind
7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, Phil 2:7 Is a self-abased mind The mind of Christ is not a self-exalting life; it is on the contrary quite the opposite. The individual who always seeks to set self up on a platform for all to see is not an individual that possesses the mind of Christ. In all that He did, He pointed men to God. He never bragged on himself for anyone thing that He did; and believe me He could have bragged a plenty, yet He made himself of no reputation. If you possess the mind of Christ you will be a self-abased individual instead of a self-absorbed individual.

19 The Mind of Christ Is a servile Mind
7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, Phil 2:7 Is a servile mind The life of our savior was a life of absolute service. He came not to do his own will, but the will of him that sent him. His life was a life of complete servitude. Is this the mind that we possess today? Do we have to be begged and prodded into service? If we do, then we do not possess the mind of Christ. Someone who possesses the mind of Christ is someone who willingly serves.

20 The Mind of Christ Is a sacrificial Mind
And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Phil 2:8 Is a sacrificial mind The mind of Christ is a sacrificial mind. It is a mind that is willing to sacrifice what ever the cost of the sacrifice may be. Consider the sacrifice of Christ. He made himself a sacrifice and died upon the cross for us. What are we willing to sacrifice in our service for God? Do we possess a sacrificial mind? If we do not, then we do not possess the mind of Christ.

21 The Mind of Christ Is a successful Mind
Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, Phil. 2:10 Is a successful mind The mind of Christ is a rewarding mind. The exaltation of Christ is the reward of his humiliation. Consider what the Bible has to say about humiliation: ~ Matthew 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. ~ I Peter 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: If you possess the mind of Christ you are on the road to ultimate success. God will exalt you in due time.
