Love on His Knees John 13:1-15 A Great Contrast The Mind of Christ The Parable of Jesus’ Ministry Our Example

A Great Contrast  Judas was moved by Satan and by greed  Jesus was motivated by self-sacrificing love, His knowledge of the Father, and His unique relationship to Him  Judas was full of pride  Jesus was full of humility  Judas was treachery and betrayal  Jesus was faithfulness to the end Love on His Knees John 13:1-15

A Great Contrast  There is the way of Satan – Isaiah 14:12-15 Love on His Knees John 13:1-15

Isaiah 14:12-15 (NASB) 12 “How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! 13 “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. 14 ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ 15 “Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit.”

A Great Contrast  There is the way of Satan – Isaiah 14:12-15  There is the way of God – Phil. 2:5-11 Love on His Knees John 13:1-15

Philippians 2:5-11 (NASB) 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

A Great Contrast  There is the way of Satan – Isaiah 14:12-15  There is the way of God – Phil. 2:5-11  Satan seeks for self first and his own fame  Jesus surrenders His life for us God says Jesus will be honored and a great blessing because of His actions. Love on His Knees John 13:1-15

The Mind of Christ  We are told three things about Jesus as He washed the disciples feet 1. Jesus knew that “the Father had put all things under His power” – He had total authority 2. Jesus knew that “He had come from the Father” – He had divine origins 3. Jesus knew that He was on the verge of “returning to God” – He had future glory Love on His Knees John 13:1-15

The Parable of Jesus’ Ministry  Jesus was dramatizing for the disciples the character of His ministry  Jesus rose from supper – He rose from His throne to leave Heaven  Jesus laid aside His garments – He laid aside His glory to leave Heaven  Jesus took a towel and girded Himself with the garb of a servant – the role He took in leaving Heaven Love on His Knees John 13:1-15

The Parable of Jesus’ Ministry  Jesus was dramatizing for the disciples the character of His ministry  Jesus poured water into a basin to wash the disciples’ feet – He would pour out His blood to wash their souls  Jesus, after finishing washing the disciples’ feet, put on His clothes and returned to the table – Hebrews 1:3-4 Love on His Knees John 13:1-15

Hebrews 1:3-4 (NASB) 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Our Example  Is this another sacrament?  No, this is an example of humility and servanthood.  If Jesus, our leader and High Priest, can do this for us, we should, as His servants, serve one another in humility.  This is spiritual as well as physical! Love on His Knees John 13:1-15

Application Are you washing the feet of others? Are you washing the feet of others spiritually? What do these actions look like? Love on His Knees John 13:1-15
