1 How do scientists do science?
BELL RINGER! How do scientists do science? Remember that if you don’t know I want to hear your best guess. It is okay to be wrong. :D

2 The Scientific Method

5 Sewer Lice! Used in New York City water treatment
Eat waste in the water Make water drinkable almost instantly!

6 Paper Airplane Lab Purpose: To design a paper airplane which flies the farthest in class Hypothesis: If I build a paper airplane, it will fly farther than any airplane built by my classmates Materials: paper, measuring tape

7 Procedure Brainstorm an airplane design
Build a paper airplane according to the design Fly the airplane Compare the distance flown with my classmate’s distances

8 Data Mrs. Piner (You name) (Furthest Flier) (Person of your choice)
Designer Distance (m) Mrs. Piner (You name) (Furthest Flier) (Person of your choice)

9 Results: My airplane (did/did not) fly the farthest in class
Conclusions: (yes/No), my hypothesis (was/was not) supported by the data. I believe my airplane (did/did not) fly the farthest because _____________________________________________________. By doing this experiment, I learned that _______________________. Sources of Error:

10 Definitions Independent Variable (I.V.)
The variable that is changed by the experimenter Also called the Mannipulated Variable The I.V. in the airplane lab was:

11 Dependent Variable (D.V.)
The variable that is being measured Also called the Responding Variable The D.V. in the airplane lab was:

12 Constant Variables that are kept the same for each experiment The constants in the airplane lab were:

13 Control The experiment that has not had any variables changed and is used as a standard comparison.

14 Important! All experiments must be reproducible
If your results don’t match your hypothesis, you change your hypothesis and perform a new experiment, you DO NOT change the data to fit the hypothesis.
