Typical examples of an AS are an internal network of an enterprise or a network infrastructure of an ISP. Interior Gateway Protocols (IGP): support small, medium-sized, and large organizations, but their scalability has its limits. The protocols can offer very fast convergence, and basic functionality is not complex to configure Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGP): The main function of BGP is to exchange a huge number of routes between different autonomous systems that are part of the largest network (the Internet).

OSPF and IS-IS protocols Path vector protocols: The path vector routing approach not only exchanges information about the existence of destination networks but also exchanges the path on how to reach the destination.
