1 DUE TODAY: Plagiarism Exercise (LM pg 118-121) Library Week

2 Generating Research Questions 1.Pick a topic. 2.See what literature already exists in that area 3.Ask your own questions Wait…what??

3 Your Topic: The effect of X on Y Questions to start with: 1.What are the documented effects of X? 2.What impacts Y (according to the existing research)? 3.Can you find any overlap between your answers for questions 1 and 2? 4.Test your own ideas too. If you have a thought, someone may have studied it. See what they found! Depending on your topic, some connections will be harder to draw than others. This is where you’ll need to get creative. Talk to your group, your UTAs, and myself! Generating Research Questions

4 Example: Generating Research Questions Topic: Effect of music on exam performance Questions that I would start with: 1.What are the documented effects of music? –Mood effects –Impacts arousal/stress responses 2.What impacts exam performance? –Stress –Studying/Preparation –Attention 3.Is there overlap between questions 1 and 2? –Mood could impact memory and attention – both related to performance –Music could impact stress responses – related to exam performance too. If your answer to question three is “Yes”, you might be on to something. Keep digging!
