1 The Very First Science Alliance Mentor Training Meeting! October 14, 2010

2 Thank You! First of all…

3 What Is Required of You, the Mentor Always be available for your buddy. Communicate with your buddy (via email) twice a week. Attend all Mentor Training at lunch and Mentor-Buddy Meetings after school. Be organized – use the SciAlli Calendar to plan out the road ahead.

4 Emails TWICE a week Use fifth-grade words (sorry, but this is not the time to practice SAT vocab!) Check spelling and grammar. Always Always Always follow the email format!

5 Email Format Mentor Last Name, Mentor First Name; Buddy Last Name, Buddy First Name; Subject Example: Vader, Darth; Skywalker, Anakin; How to Use the Force.

6 The Good, the Bad, and the Email Bad Email: wassup kid? need sum help 4 the hypo? u can use this 1: if u shine red light on plant, it will grow more Why is this email bad?

7 The Good, the Bad, and the Email Good Email: Hello (insert buddy name), I just wanted to double check on your progress with the hypothesis. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask. Remember to try using the “If… then…” format we discussed before! Here’s an example _____ Be sure to respond back this week. (insert your name) Why is this email good?

8 Your Very First Mentor-Buddy Meeting

9 Your First Mentor-Buddy Meeting Bring: –Your mentor binder –A pen or pencil –A smile on your face Arrive at the Commons by 3:30 pm! Sign in at the front. Be sure to pick up a worksheet. Go to the sign on the wall with your buddy’s school name wait there until he/she arrives.

10 Your First Mentor-Buddy Meeting (cont.) When your buddy and his/her parent arrive: –First, greet your buddy enthusiastically! –Second, greet your buddy’s parent or legal guardian (they will become of much help throughout the year!). Engage in a light conversation. Get to know your buddy. Exchange contact information (email and phone numbers)!

11 Your First Mentor-Buddy Meeting (cont.) Find out what your buddy is interested in. –You and your buddy will design an experiment that caters to your buddy’s interest –This is your buddy’s project – NOT your own!
