2. Debts and Losses Many soldiers who survived the war left the army with no money. ▫The gov’t paid soldiers for their work by granting them free land in the western frontier.  Many soldiers sold this land for money. Congress and the states borrowed money to finance the war effort- left with a debt of $27 million dollars.

4. Treaty of Paris Benjamin Franklin & John Adams went to France to set up peace talks. War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. ▫Britain recognized the United States of America as an independent country. Treaty of Paris was ratified by Congress in 1783. Atlantic  Mississippi Canada  Florida border

5. Freedom and Slavery During the Revolution, some people began to see a conflict between slavery and the ideals of life, liberty, & pursuit of happiness. Many states would outlaw slavery. Elizabeth Freeman- sued for her freedom in a Massachusetts court and won. Richard Allen- helped form the African Society, a group that encouraged to help each other.
