3 Harriet’s Early Life  Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland in the year 1822.  Her birth name was Araminta Ross.  She was born as a slave, on a plantation owned by Anthony Thompson.  She worked as a house servant as a child and then she was moved into the fields.  In 1844, she married a freed slave named John Tubman.

5 The Underground Railroad  In 1849, Harriet freed herself by using the underground railroad and found her way to Philadelphia.  For 10 years Tubman conducted about 12 escape missions on the underground railroad.  These missions freed about 70 slaves including many of her family members.  Many of these people moved to Ontario, Canada for safety.  During the Underground Railroad she was known as Moses.

7 Civil War  Throughout the Civil War Harriet provided nursing care to black soldiers and freed slaves.  Harriet was a spy for the Union.  She was the first women to command an armed military raid.

9 Harriet’s Later Life  Harriet was a community activist, humanitarian and a suffragist.  Harriet’s husband died in 1867 and then she married Nelson Davis.  She opened the, Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged in Auburn, New York.  Harriet died in the year 1913.
