1. Can People Go to Mars? NASA astronauts have been in space, off and 45 years. They ’ ve never spent much time far from Earth. Deep space is filled with protons from solar flares, gamma rays from newborn black holes, and cosmic rays from exploding stars.A long voyage to Mars, is going to be a new adventure. Astronauts have rarely experienced a full dose of these deep space GCRs. Consider the International Space Station (ISS) : it orbits only 400 km above Earth ’ s surface.
