3 © Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Just as with e-mail, word processing, and browsers, telnet is a generic term for software that allows you to connect to remote sites. There are several telnet programs available, and I have used WinQVT both on- and off-campus. There is a telnet program that is supplied with Windows, and you can access the telnet program from Internet Explorer.

Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies Buffalo State provides two Internet servers for student use: a Unix-based one (bscacad2.buffalostate.edu) which uses Apache software and a Windows-based one (bscstudent.buffalostate.edu) which uses IIS (Internet Information Services) software. Worldwide, the majority of Internet servers are Unix-based ones. However, when using the Unix operating system, you have to know some cryptic Unix commands.

9 © Anthony J. Nowakowski, Ph.D. EDC 601 Instructional Technologies FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a generic term for software that allows you to transfer local files to and from remote sites. There are several ftp programs available, and I have used WS_FTP both on- and off-campus. You can also ftp files to/from sites directly from Internet Explorer or from Windows Explorer. With the release of IE 7.0 and Windows Vista, it is more difficult to ftp files, so we will focus on using WS_FTP to transfer files.
