2 Classroom Emergency Procedures In ALL emergencies call 911 or for cellphones 617-343-4911 Know your role in an emergency before it presents itself

3 External Communication Relay a well informed message by speaking in a single, well informed voice to the audience Expect the news media to arrive on-site very soon after the police, fire department, or EMS respond to an emergency The School System has the right to restrict media access to students, faculty, staff and school buildings Primary spokesperson for BPS is the Office of Communications All communication with the media should be handled by the Principal or his/her designee, and should involve consultation with the Communications Office Do not identify students by name or disclose any privileged information such as mental health, emotional or physical well being, or educational history

4 Evacuation Listen for instructions as routes/assembly areas may change Take daily attendance Leave ALL personal belongings behind Walk, do not run. Do not use elevators Account for all students when you reach assembly area Notify the Headmaster of any injuries Do not reenter the school until told to do so

5 Safe Mode EXTERIOR TO BUILDING Safe mode is a protective action to safeguard faculty, staff, and students when there is an armed perpetrator Familiarize yourself with the system that will be used to warn you to lockdown Listen for instructions

6 INTRUDER Take refuge in nearest room Close and secure all doors Close and lock all windows Close blinds or shades Turn off all lights Direct students to sit quietly on the floor away from windows and doors

7 Shelter-In-Place A temporary strategy designed when there is insufficient time to evacuate to a safe location Close all doors and windows to seal building Take daily attendance Relocate everyone to pre-determined area Account for and supervise students Remain in the shelter until told otherwise

8 Power Outage/Utility Failure Identify persons with disabilities who may need special assistance Principal with access the scope and expected duration of outage/utility failure Principal with provide information via whatever communications system is available Remain in classroom and do not leave unnecessarily Do not use elevators Check restrooms, stairwell, and corridors to assist anyone that may need it Direct any problems/special circumstances to the main office

9 Medical Emergency Note location of AED, First Aid supplies and trained staff members Universal Precautions whenever there is potential contact with infectious materials Call the main office to report medical emergency Provide CPR/AED/First Aid if trained Locate nurse

10 Hazardous Material Spill Do not attempt to rescue anyone overcome by chemical vapors or gases in an enclosed room If exposed to a chemical, on clothing, skin or by inhalation, remove the clothing, and seek medical treatment immediately If the spill is dangerous to life or health, evacuate immediately and notify office from a safe location Provide the following information: location, type of chemical spilled, known hazards, quantity spilled, number and extent of injuries, has spill or vapors spread into the drain or ventilation system

11 Hazardous Material Spill Provide First Aid if you have been trained Locate and direct nurse to the victim (s) Evacuate the area and surrounding areas that may be in danger Establish a safe perimeter around the spill and allow only trained and equipped responders to enter the danger zone Clean up the spill only if the spill is small, you are aware of the hazards of the chemical, you have been properly trained to clean up the spill, and no special protective equipment is required

12 Suspicious Package Know the indicators Notify Headmaster that suspicious package has been detected Alert everyone in adjacent areas and clear the area If is it believed to be a bomb, evacuate building and follow Bomb Threat procedures Note reasons for identifying as suspicious

13 Bomb Threat Electronic mail threat Written threat Telephone call Verbal threats Bomb Threat Evaluation

14 Missing Person Missing person’s information Missing person’s last known whereabouts Procedures Abduction Kidnapping

15 Weapon Assault Warning signs Possession of a weapon Assault or fight in progress Acts of violence in progress Armed intruder in classroom

16 Weapon Assaults Armed Intruder in the classroom If possible notify Main Officer Do as gunman demands Avoid sudden moves Never argue Avoid using force unless necessary Talk to gunman and learn as much as possible Keep attention on you, not students Be observant but do not stare Mentally record detailed description of person/weapon Preserve the crime scene and avoid disturbing evidence

17 Fire/Explosion If you see a fire, pull the nearest fire alarm Notify the Main Office from a safe location Evacuate using the primary evacuation path and follow instructions for Evacuation procedures Explosion – notify Principal of structural damage or collapse, injuries, hazardous leaks (liquids, mists, vapors, gas), unexplained odors

18 Fire/Explosion Explosion Inside Evacuate along established routes Redirect away from explosion Do not use elevators Discontinue use of radios and cell phones Take class roster and inform Principal of missing persons Explosion Outside If you are in danger evacuate away from the scene. Follow Evacuation procedures Keep away from windows and prepare to “Shelter-In- Place.”
