2 2 Key Challenge Waste management Establishment of an integral waste management system, National Waste Management Strategy (2005) Remediation and closing down of landfills and “hot spots” National Waste Management Plan (July 2007) Setting up max 21 waste management centers Implementation of “polluter pays” principle (regulations adopted 2005-2007) Possible solution efficient operation of the Eco-Fund EU funds

3 3 Key Challenge Industrial pollution control Harmonisation with the IPPC directive new Environmental Protection Act (2007) – MEPPPC as the CA Implementing legislation in 2008 Preparations for investments into BAT Possible solution Mobilising the private sector for the cleaner production, awareness raising activities amongst stakeholders on the need to upgrade technology

6 6 Key Challenge Climate Change Kyoto Protocol ratified in April 2007 draft National Strategy for the Implementation of the UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol with the Action Plan Possible solution Projects in the field of reduction of GHG emissions Energy sector: renewable energy projects Transportation sector: introducing bio-fuels in Croatia, Energy efficiency: in energy production, construction sector.. Waste sector - use of landfill gas for electricity production

7 7 Key Challenge Absorption of EU funds DIS as of February 2006 Preparations underway for the conferral of management /accreditation process for IPA (2008) Establishment of IPA Operating Structure /– Regional development /Environment: MEPPPC has the lead role Possible solution Strenghtening administrative capacity (staff number and expertise)
