2 EXPANDING EDUCATION Reformers believed the US needed to progress – people needed more education Public schools increased – girls attended - boys still went to work to help families In South, African Americans still attending segregated schools – or receiving no education 1900- “Progressives” want students to learn citizenship as well as facts. John Dewey – relate learning to interests, problems, concerns of students 1862 – Morrill Act – US gov’t gave land to states to sell for education –land-grant colleges.
