Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Ephesians 5:21 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also should wives to their husbands in everything. 22 Wives, to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also should wives to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, [submit] to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should [submit] to their husbands in everything. 22 Wives, [submit] to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should [submit] to their husbands in everything. Ephesians 5:21 Hupotasso is repeated only once in verses 22-24. To supply extra “submit”s seems to change the nuance of the context.

Husbands, this is not addressed to you. This is not something that you are to “enforce.” “Enable.” Ephesians 5:21

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. The context is that within the body of Christ, we are all to submit to each other. (Any use of verse 22 must include the context of verse 23) (Any use of verse 22 must include the context of verse 23) This is for wives to do in regard to their husbands, not to men in general. There is no hierarchy of value here in the least. (Luke 2:51) Let your husband be in charge. (Dominance is not in view) Ephesians 5:21

This relationship was established in the beginning. Adam was put in charge and Eve was added as a fully qualified co-worker. Ephesians 5:21

Genesis 2:15-18 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Christ has this position due to his identity/person, but we must also understand that he has paid the price for this status as well. “Savior” ~ implicit responsibility. status as well. “Savior” ~ implicit responsibility. Within this context, we should joyfully place ourselves under Christ. This is not teaching that wives should endure abuse. Is Jesus abusive, domineering, controlling, mean... ? Ephesians 5:21

Husbands have the responsibility for the outcome of their families/homes. They are the ones that God holds to account. If God has placed husbands in this responsibility then their wives need to acknowledge this in their conduct toward their husbands. Ephesians 5:21
