Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Engineering Diploma Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World In this unit, you will discover the world of engineering. You will develop an understanding of the diverse sectors within engineering and how these interlink to offer a range of services and products. You will investigate the achievements and developments of the engineering world from a local and national perspective and investigate the effect engineering has on the modern world.

Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World L2 U1 Learning Outcomes: Know about engineering sectors and their products or services Know about job opportunities available within the engineering industry and the role of professional engineering institutions Know about the achievements in engineering that relate to social and economic development Understand the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees in engineering. Next >

Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World The engineering world covers many different sectors from aerospace engineering to water and waste management. The products and services provided by engineering companies make the world go round. There are many different routes to a career in engineering. Engineers need a range of different qualifications and skills depending on the role and industry they work in. Many engineers are members of professional institutions which can bring many benefits to the engineer. Next > L2 U1 Content:

Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Engineering has had a huge impact on society for most of history. Some of the engineering achievements in the last few hundred years have literally changed the way we live and work. In all fields of work, a good understanding of current legislation is important. Engineering is no different and it is important that engineers do understand the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees. Next > L2 U1 Content:

Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Task 1 Demonstrate you know about engineering sectors and their products or services. Investigate and research different sectors of engineering. This may include sectors that are relevant to your local area, or those that you are familiar with or interested in. ■ Describe two different sectors of engineering. Give examples of products or services provided by each of these two sectors. ■ Identify and describe the function of the products or services provided from each of the engineering sectors identified above. ■ Give examples of commercially available products or services available from engineering companies within the sectors you have identified and explain the function and operation of each product or service. Next >

Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Task 2 Demonstrate you know about job opportunities available within the engineering industry and the role of professional engineering institutions. Task 2.1 - Engineering Employment You need to research engineering companies that may offer opportunities to students who are currently studying or have recently completed engineering programmes. You should explore a variety of job roles across a range of engineering sectors: ■ Describe four different job roles that are available in the engineering companies you have researched ■ For each of the job opportunities you have identified, describe the career progression opportunities available. Evaluate the experience, skills and qualifications needed in order to gain such a position and identify opportunities for further progression beyond this role. Task 2.2 - Engineering Institutions ■ Describe the function of the Engineering Council UK and how it regulates the engineering profession, its relationship to licensed professional engineering institutions and the professional registration of engineers ■ Evaluate the obligations and benefits for professional engineering registration at both a national and international level. Next >

Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Task 3 Demonstrate you know about the achievements in engineering that relate to social and economic development in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. You need to research the main achievements in engineering over the last few centuries: ■ Describe a key achievement in engineering from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries ■ Describe key developments that made these achievements possible and comment on their economic or social impact ■ Evaluate how these key developments in engineering directly impacted social and economic life at a local and national level. Next >

Level 2 Unit 1 Exploring the Engineering World Task 4 Demonstrate you understand the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees in engineering. A manager for a medium sized engineering establishment would be responsible for ensuring that the team was familiar with appropriate employer legislation: ■ Produce a brief which could be circulated to the team describing the key responsibilities of employers and employees in accordance with the current Employment Act. ■ Describe the responsibilities of employers and employees in relation to employment legislation applicable to working in the engineering sector and say why such legislation is needed. ■ Senior management at the company have identified ‘awareness of employment legislation’ as a high priority. Explain how you would encourage the team to carry out their responsibilities while at work, in relation to the legislation identified above. End >
