1 Answer “Warm-Up 4/28/15” in your notebook:
What three (3) elements move through the parts of the ecosystem in cycles? Why do organisms need these elements?

2 Ecology: Energy Transfer

3 Food Web Instructions:
Use this food web to create five different food chains present in this community.

5 Trophic Level Instructions:
Use this food web to identify one organism of each of the following levels: i. Primary Consumer, ii. Secondary Consumer, iii. Tertiary Consumer, iv. Quaternary Consumer and v. Producer

7 Partner Swap! Follow directions to move to your new assigned partner.

8 Energy Transfer Instructions: Organize the following TEN terms into THREE categories. (Hint: Each category has at least three terms.) Herbivore Carnivore Prey Primary Consumer Predator Producer Autotroph Secondary Consumer Tertiary Consumer Photosynthesis

10 Information: Each trophic level can usually only transfer 10% of their energy up the food chain to the next trophic level. Most energy is released back into the environment as heat.

11 Question: If there are 2000 units of energy available from one trophic level (pigeons, rats, raccoons, and boots), how many energy units will be transferred to the next trophic level up the food chain (humans)? Show your math work and explain your reasoning.

13 Partner Swap! Follow directions to move to your new assigned partner.

14 Energy Units Instructions:
Write a caption for this diagram that explains what is trying to be conveyed here.

16 1) Looking at the right hand side of the diagram:
The cattle in the diagram below have 7,000 energy units. How many energy units are available in the plants? How many energy units are available in the humans? 2) Looking at the left hand side of the diagram:

18 Partner Swap! Follow directions to move to your new assigned partner.

19 Review: 1) If the producers in this food web had 350,000 units of energy available, how many units of energy are available at the primary consumer level?

20 The partner on the left shares their answers with the partner on the right. (30 seconds)

21 Review: 2) Which five organisms are (at least sometimes) members of the secondary consumer level? How many energy units are available at this level?

22 The partner on the left shares their answers with the partner on the right. (30 seconds)

23 Please return now to your original assigned seat.

24 Ecological Cycle Activity:
In your groups, choose pictures from the baggie to organize into the Carbon Cycle. You will NOT use all the pictures. Have your teacher check your work before moving on. Sketch the Carbon Cycle you created into your book and explain each step. Repeat steps 1 & 2 for the Nitrogen Cycle. Repeat steps 1 & 2 for the Water Cycle. Repeat steps 1 & 2 for the Phosphorus Cycle. Put all the pictures back into the baggie and return the pictures to your teacher.

25 Exit Ticket: Quick Write Prompt (5 minutes)
What would happen in this community if a pesticide from a nearby farm killed off most Herbivorous Insects?

26 Exit Ticket: Quick Write Prompt (5 minutes)
What would happen in this community if an invasive plant that tasted unpleasant to animals took over the area where the native plants grew?
