Product Process Management (PPM) is most expensive but least automated function of large engineering companies –Must include the supply chain –Poor communication, often just drawings or FAX’s Incompatibilities among computer systems, applications, and data formats used to create and store engineering information –Difficult exchange and sharing –Leads to data re-entry –Leads to decreased quality / increased turnaround time –Barrier to Internet / e-Manufacturing

Other Parts of STEP Definition Infrastructure –Part 11: EXPRESS Language describes information models. –Part 14: EXPRESS-X Language describes views and queries. Common Library of Definitions –Part 40’s: Common definitions for product structure, geometry, topology, dates, approvals, presentation, etc. –APs reference these definitions and give additional context. Implementation Infrastructure –Part 21: Exchange file format for communicating data sets defined by an EXPRESS schema. –Parts 22-29: APIs for working with EXPRESS-defined data in languages like C, C++, Java, XML.

Project Histories Mechanical Design - AP-203/214/224 –NIIIP, SMART, STEP-NC, MDICM, AM3 (Funding = $7.3m) –Proved out geometry models, translators, AP-203 in every MCAD system. Process Plant / Shipbuilding - AP-227 –SHIIP, SPARS, ISEC, WSME (Funding = $2m) –Proving out product configuration models, large scale databases, viewers, AP-227 translators in progress for most process plant systems. Electrical - AP-210/212 –PreAmp, more are needed. (Funding = $50k) –Must prove out multi-discipline model, link between design requirement and physical model. –No commercial implementations.

Conclusion STEP is a success in MCAD and process plant. –Strong support from industry projects brought results. –Vendors followed with commercial translators. The ECAD systems cannot ignore geometry. The MCAD systems cannot ignore connectivity. This program can prove out the AP-210 model and create viewers and databases to bring success in electrical domain.
