Need for co-operation in geothermal energy in the Danube Region – an outlook and way forward Annamária Nádor Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary TRANSENERGY Final Conference, June 24, 2013, Vienna
2
TRANSENERGY outcomes as best practices TRANSENEGY Hungary Slovakia Croatia Way of thinking and established methodologies – „a new country” Identify stakeholders → understand their needs → „translate”policy related / manegement questions to scientific ones Find the best way to provide appropriate answers: integrated geoscientific models (geological, hydrogeological, geothermal) Feed the models with uniform (harmonized) data input Slovenia Austria Find the right partners: National Geological Surveys as governmental organizations have: Most complete national databases Expertise to provide impartial assessments
3
Lessons learned in TRANSENERGY should be expanded to Europe/ Danube Region
4
Why? The geothermal potential of the Danube Region is outstanding, ambitious NREAP targets 2 km 3 km 4 km 3 Geothermal energy in NREAP (PJ) Country20102020 Austria0,8031,682 Bulgaria0,0420,377 Czech Republic0,0000,694 Germany1,52134,676 Hungary4,22916,423 Romania1,0473,349 Slovenia0,7540,837 Slovakia0,1263,876 Source of temperature maps: Geoelec project
5
Why? Transboundary issues Geothermal reservoirs do not stop at state borders: harmonized management strategies between the neighbouring countries are essential to guarantee sustainable production and reach environmental goals
6
Next steps and way forward Official project closure: September 30, 2013 Final reports and Strategy Paper → distribution to stakeholders Training on the use of the web-portal (national events, September) Vision: Geothermal information platform as a basis of joint understanding and evalution of resources Synergies with other ongoing / planned projects: Geothermal ERANET, GeoMOL, Geo-DH, etc
