5 The *Main* Way People Can Affect The Forest The forest was filled with large Spruce, Hemlock, White oak, and other popular trees. They were really attractive to logging interests which turned into lumber. At first lumbering was slow. Between 1880 and 1920 most of all the West Virginia forests were logged. That means less trees and plants to support the organisms. That is the main way people can affect the forest.
