How’s it going? REVISITING THE READER’S NOTEBOOK

Welcome back! ①Take out your Reader’s Notebook. ①Take a moment to add to your Reading Log. If you need a new one, come on up to the blue stool. ②Read my comments to you and your rubric.

Share your reading… Think about something great that you read over break. Tell your seatmate about it. Include WHY you liked it.

What’s going well? Take a look at my comments, thoughts, the rubric,… Write about the things that are going well… How have you grown in your thinking? At what skills do you think you are particularly strong? (Questions, Reactions, Predictions, Inferences, Summaries, Connections…) What do you like about the Notebook? (Come up with a good title for this entry.)

Room to grow… Where should you go next? Write about things that could be improved upon or things that you’d like to work on to become a better reader. (What should you title this?)

Thinking about your goals Have you been working towards them? Are they reasonable? Do they mean anything to you? Choose one thing on which you should work. Write it in a positive way! (It can be totally different from what you already have.) Make sure the thing that you choose is meaningful. Will it help you grow as a reader? This will be what you focus on for the next two weeks.

Quality Reading Responses Our goal with our Reader’s Notebook is to track our thinking and to see how we grow as readers over the course of the year. Here are a few examples of your classmates doing some impressive thinking….

10/12/13 Start Percentage: 93% End Percentage: 100% I can’t believe that Kira is the Partial Failsafe. It means that if Kira is somehow triggered the whole entire race of the partials will be wiped out. Kira will have committed genocide. I don’t understand who would’ve made it because the Trust had already broken up 5 years earlier when the first batch of Partials were let out for battle. I predict that Nandita did all of this and the control of her experiments was Madison and the variable was Kira and maybe Ariel. Kira should tell someone her situation and not just keep it inside like she normally does. This could destroy the whole world if she feels the need to be the hero.

Looking at the response. What do you see in this response? What skills are being used? What goals could be set?

Nov. 22, 2013 170-186 Was Plutarch, Haymitch and Beetee’s prediction that the capital hijacked Peeta correct? I think so because if they altered his memories of Katniss to be dark and full of fear, it makes sense that he would be frightened and furious enough to try to choke her. Also, since Mockingjay is a fiction book, hijacking can be a possible form of torture, even though it’s not in real life (because we don’t have tracker jackers). Will he ever get cured, if so how? I think that Peeta will be able to be cured. To do this, I think that Katniss will have to speak to him calmly and explain the situation. I predict that this will help Peeta regain his memory and be welcoming to Katniss again.

Looking at the response. What do you see in this response? What skills are being used? What goals could be set?

Read Three Questions by Leo Tolstoy Interact with the text by making notes, underlining, highlighting, sketching,… I’ve cut off the last paragraph. What do you think the hermit will say about the answers to the questions? Why do you think that? Talk with your seatmate about the story. Individually, create a Reading Response in your Reader’s Notebook that… Focuses on a skill – Questions, Reactions, Predictions, Inferences, Connections Uses evidence from the story to help prove your point.

The end of the story: Remember then: there is only one time that is important--Now! It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power. The most necessary man is he with whom you are, for no man knows whether he will ever have dealings with any one else: and the most important affair is, to do him good, because for that purpose alone was man sent into this life!"

What we are looking for this term in RN… Dates, Titles, Pages Four responses per week For days when you don’t respond, write the date and the pages to track your pacing. Varied responses that show you are thinking in different ways Show your thinking! Why do you think that? Evidence from the text to support your thinking Work toward your goal or work that considers my comments

Writing for the New Year Choose one of the inspirational quotes and write about it. You can… Tell what it means to you and how it will guide you this year. Write a story about the quote. Create a character that is struggling with something and uses the quote to make life better. Work with your partner and create an ABCs for a Successful New Year.
