Pre-war gov’ts return in nations invaded by Hitler Countries get to keep their “pre-war” possessions (Africa) Occupation by U.S. U.S. will run/influence Japan Colonies/Possessions returned to Europe or China, Korea gets independence Most major cities completely destroyed Jpn. and Germ. are demilitarized War Tribunals punish war criminals GERMANY/EUROPEJAPAN/ASIA

3 Yalta & Potsdam Conference: Germany At Yalta, Big Three decided to split into occupation zones Soviets, US, Britain, and later France gets a zone German capital of Berlin (S.U. zone) is also divided into 4 occupation zones Final Agreement signed at Potsdam Big Three

4 Post War Japan Churchill tells Pres. Truman “that Stalin is not to be trusted” Truman warns Stalin of a secret weapon he may use on Jpn. U.S. uses A-Bomb Stalin doesn’t try to co-occupy Japan The US writes a new Japanese constitution Stalin wants influence in Asia (other than Jpn.)! MacArthur runs country & allows Emperor Hirohito to stay (tradition)
