Solid A solid is matter that has a definite shape and volume. Particles in a solid are packed closely together. Particles vibrate in place, but do not have enough energy to move out of their fixed position. Liquid A liquid is matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape. If you pour a liquid from one container to another, the liquid will form to the container, but the amount stays the same. Particles in a liquid move more freely than a solid but it doesn’t have enough energy to move far.
3
Gas Gas is matter that has no definite shape or volume. Particles in a gas are far apart and move at high speeds in all directions. Plasma Plasma occurs at extremely high temperatures. Found in stars, lightning, and neon lights.
4
Atoms and molecules of substances move because they have energy. As the amount of energy increases, so does the movement of molecules! If a substance loses energy, the molecules move more slowly. Why does matter change state?
5
Changes between a solid and a liquid state 1.Melting occurs when a solid absorbs thermal energy and its temperature rises. 2.Freezing occurs as the liquid cools, it loses thermal energy and the particles slow down and come closer together. Changes between a liquid and gas state Vaporization and Condensation Changes between a solid and gas state This is called sublimation- skips the liquid state
