2 Essential Question How were Hobbes and Locke’s views of people and government different?

3 What was the Enlightenment? During the 1600s and 1700s, many Europeans began to place their faith in REASON Using logical thinking to solve problems This period of history became known as the ENLIGHTENMENT

4 Where did reason come from? The Enlightenment was sparked by the scientists of the Scientific Revolution People like Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton, who had used reason and experimentation to understand the universe

5 Who wanted to apply it to society? Political thinkers began using reason and scientific thinking to look at society and government They hoped to understand people and government better by using reason and thus make changes for the better

6 What are the two schools of thought? Two major English philosophers had reached two very different conclusions about the state of nature JOHN LOCKE THOMAS HOBBES The glass is half full! The glass is half empty!

7 What were Hobbes’ ideas? THOMAS HOBBES  Felt that life was nasty, brutish, and short  Believed humans were naturally selfish and violent and could not be trusted

8 What were Locke’s ideas? JOHN LOCKE  Argued that people were naturally good  Believed everyone was born with a clean slate and that our thoughts can from our experiences  Thought people were born with NATURAL RIGHTS such as life, liberty and property

9 How did they feel about government? People need strong leaders to make the decisions for them If a government fails to protect the people, then the people have the right to set up a new government THOMAS HOBBES JOHN LOCKE
