OUTLINE  System Basics - Recall Software and Hardware components HV Control Structure  HBD HV Control – Introduction Getting Started Features  Relay Board and Trip Detector  Coming Up Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 1 of 13

HV SYSTEM BASICS  HV Control is based on CS architecture (before: TS)  System communicates ONLY with own HBD Server on va022  HBD server (/hbd/startHBD) sends CMDs and receives data from hvclient  robust and secure!  Two Modes: SA1 and HBD Expert  Two User / Access Levels: STANDARD and SUPERUSER  3-Layer System has been used:  40 channels to serve (20 GEMs, 20 Meshs)  Hardware: L1458HP mainframe, L1471Ns, Voltage Divider, Relay Boards  HV Control is INDEPENDENT of Relay Board Installation! Java GUI Perl / SSH Client C via shell Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 2 of 13

USER INTRO – GETTING STARTED  With HBD installation on December 1 st, 2008 – the installer will become available for download from va022> /hbd/hvcontrol/hbdcontrol.exe Easy access through HBD website  Follow installation steps…. BNL Life No. and Serial required!  After Reboot and Click on Desktop Icon: Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 Splash Initializing interface… Checking network connection and speed First-time user?? 6 USER INTRO – GETTING STARTED  HV System Activation is required for first-time users! You need… Locate Public Key on local disk Corresponding username – same as to RSSH machines 16-digit activation code  Unique code defining privileges  Provided to every HBD group member and one for shift crew (pre-inst.)  By clicking “Verify” - the system checks in hvdb the code’s existence and displays BNL ID and Name for user verification of correct code pick-up  By clicking “Activate System” – loads HV Control privileges based on code Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 ActivationLogin to SA1 or Expert Mode Window opens… Locate your public key on disk. BNL Username Indicating if code is correct, wrong or unknown. HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 5 of 13

USER INTRO – GETTING STARTED Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 Activation Window opens… Locate your public key on disk. BNL Username Indicating if code is correct, wrong or unknown. THE PROTECTION SYSTEM – General Introduction –  Running Shift Mode means only ONE client at a time can login to HV Control, which is the specially authorized system in the counting room!  Activation code indicates user level: STANDARD or SUPERUSER  System in counting room has superuser privileges, meaning nobody else can login; however, HBD experts can take over control at any time (notification for SA1..)  System NOT responding, superuser ID set free automatically  Use of Shift Mode outside of BNL prohibited by firewall  Expert Mode: no network restrictions! 8 USER INTRO – GETTING STARTED  If your user access level, based on code, restricts you from running Expert Mode, a error window pops up – denying access!  BNL ID and password only have to be set once by simply saving the settings  No access restrictions to Shift Mode  Troubleshooting, Q/A’s under “Help” Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 Login Loading HV Control HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 7 of 13

USER INTRO – GETTING STARTED  System Overview provides a quick overview of the detector status Live-updated every 5sec (incl. parameters)  HV Control Panel represents the main control for the SA1 – easy! STANDBY Select enabled modules + sethv to particular standby voltages from HBD config file (saved locally from hvdb and updated every 5sec). OPERATIONAL Select modules on standby + same procedure as for standby to op. RECOVERY Select tripped modules + disable + sethv (…) + enable DISABLE / ENABLE >> Opens HBD Module Control window… Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 HV Control Age: 0-5sec OK + Trip + Call Expert HV ON/OFF + FB/RB + Report + Shell + Save + Switch to Detail… HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 8 of 13

USER INTRO – GETTING STARTED Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 Toggle Button: Select and Deselect for Action.  Modules in… GREEN: enabled, no trip RED: enabled, tripped (not clickable) BLUE: disabled (not displayed)  By clicking on green module a blue border will indicate its selection; when done, click “DISABLE MODULES” Blue border(s) blinking till changing to BLUE If clicking “ENABLE MODULES” – Error! (…)  By clicking on blue module a green border will indicate its selection; when done, click “ENABLE MODULES” Green border(s) blinking till changing to GREEN If clicking “DISABLE MODULES” – Error! 12 USER INTRO – ADD. FEATURES Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 For a complete detailed introduction to HBD HV Control V2.0, please refer to documentation or online tutorials. HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 11 of 13

RELAY BOARD AND TRIP DETECTOR  System has been used so far and hasn’t shown any issues, until now….  Indefinable problems occurred:  Having just the connection cable to trip detector hooked up, a “virtual trip” can be seen, meaning the LED on the board indicates trip, however, after measuring it shows still same op. voltage.  Having the relay board and L1471N SHVs and connection cable hooked up (operating case), we see one relay trip causing multiple random LeCroy channel trips.  Even switching from the non-isolated RS485 to the isolated port didn’t help!  Powering the board independently from mainframe didn’t help!  Possible explanation: airborne NOISE sparks Shielding Test: taking the relay board out of the mainframe, shielding the LeCroy module all around seemed to solve the issue – problem almost disappeared  Next step: placing all 6 L1471Ns on right, relay boards on left side of mainframe and strong isolation in between… if this brings us back on track, we can use the relay board for Run9. 14 COMING UP  Relay Board research will continue, but is independent from HV Control development!  Real-time simulation of all 40 channels (GEM and Mesh)  Major server software work necessary – making parameter settings via software possible and secure (file system not exposed!) Additional live-login to hvconfig without opening another tunnel Getting va022 ready for Run9 – auto-starts, hvclient, etc. (with Martin)  Switching from table to database (to design) for parameter setting  Online documentation and Introduction Tutorials (HBD website) Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: September 30 th, 2008 HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 13 of 13
