HBD HV Control and Monitoring System A Gain vs. HV study throughout Run-9 – PART 2 – Manuel Proissl HBD Meeting 06/23/2009

GENERAL NOTES  Entire gain and HV data from Run-9 has been processed and is written to the gain tables in hvdb for future reference.  Several (first) sections of this data have been analyzed and are presented below.  Although gain fluctuations are studied based on parameters we’re aware of having direct effect on the gain, incl. P/T measurement and Applied GEM voltage; a solid overall conclusion of its real behavior cannot be given at this point, as the following results indicate. HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 2 of 11 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 23 rd, 2009

NO HV CHANGE :: CHANGE IN GAIN HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 3 of 11 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 23 rd, 2009 3980V 2500V HV activity while no PHYSICS running Gain increases by ~ 50% During a PHYSICS running “downtime” of 4 hours, the detector was at Standby.

NO HV CHANGE :: CHANGE IN GAIN HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 4 of 11 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 23 rd, 2009 During the entire inspected runtime, the P/T varied by 0.25% and stayed within its bin: 2.52892 - 2.555846 Torr /K During a PHYSICS running “downtime” of 4 hours, the detector was at Standby.  Gain changed even though no change in voltage nor acceptable P/T within ±10% window. RUNS PROCESSED: 288007 - 288069 WITHIN P/T BIN: T1

HV CHANGE :: CHANGE IN GAIN HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 5 of 11 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 23 rd, 2009 Gain increases by ~ 96% During a PHYSICS running “downtime” of 2 hours, the detector was brought to Standby and then ‘Quad- tripped’ before the SA1 recovered it to a new P/T HV setting… the gain jump appears. QUAD-TRIP

HV CHANGE :: CHANGE IN GAIN HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 6 of 11 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 23 rd, 2009 Gain increases by ~ 22% During a PHYSICS running “downtime” of 2 hours, the detector was brought to Standby. STANDBY

HV CHANGE :: CHANGE IN GAIN HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 7 of 11 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 23 rd, 2009 During the ENTIRE runtime, P/T has been rising (~ 1%) without any change in gain until it passed the boundary, which is when we adjusted the voltage… The software did what it was supposed to do! However, the idea is to keep the gain STABLE by adjusting the HV if the gain raises or falls respectively! T1/T2 BOUNDARY T1 T2 HV CHANGE 2.555846 Torr/K RUNS PROCESSED: 288835 - 288900

Nevertheless, the gain remained constant. T1 T2 T3 CONFIG CHANGE APPLY HV CHANGE shown above IR ACCESS GAS MIXING HOUSE PROBLEM RUNS PROCESSED: 288094 - 288900

GAIN STABILITY FOR ALL 200GeV runs HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 10 of 11 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 23 rd, 2009 One module from the East and West is plotted for the two most activate P/T sets throughout the entire 200 GeV run. Only Physics runs without virtual or hardware trips in ES3 or WN5 have been chosen. Overall stability of the gain can be seen for each individual set.

Entire P/T Variation for Run-9 HBD HV Control & Monitoring System Manuel Proissl Page 11 of 11 Upgrades For Run9 | PHENIX, BNL HBD HV Control System HBD Meeting :: June 23 rd, 2009 A large fraction of the 500 GeV data shows lower P/T, corresponding to March 15 th to April 13 th.  mostly T1 & T2 bin activity. Unlike the overall 200 GeV run, showing several high peaks with a primary bin range of T2 to T3. 200 GeV500 GeV
