1/15/15 WARM UP On the back of your Quickwrite 1 paper, write what you know about a papaya tree based on the poem, page 8, and the picture here. PAPAYA TREE

Learning Targets 1. I can make inferences to deepen understanding of Inside Out & Back Again Inference = Details + Background Knowledge 2. I can cite evidence from the novel to explain how incidents reveal aspects of Ha’s character as she is shaped by war. cite evidence = proof/details from the text 3. I can specific word choices I poem “Papaya Tree” create tone and help reveal meaning. 4. I can participate in discussions about the text. Talk only to the group or partner you are assigned. If another person is too loud let the teacher know. Stay on the topic.

TEXT-DEPENDENT QUESTIONS
1. How did the papaya tree begin to grow? Was the planting of the tree intentional or a careless act? How do you know this? The tree grew from a seed thrown into the yard carelessly. Ha said, “I flicked” so that action is she probably threw it in the garden after eating a papaya like we throw watermelon seeds into the grass.

#2 From the youngest to the oldest, Ha describes what each brother sees on the tree. What is the pattern she describes?

#3 Ha vows to be the first to witness, or observe the ripening of the papaya fruit. What does the word vows mean in this context? Where else did we read that Ha wanted to be the first at something instead of her oldest brother?

#4 What can you infer or conclude about Ha’s character based on the incidents she describes in these two poems?

QUICK WRITE A Quick Write is a short piece of writing (a paragraph) that answers a question about the text. It needs: A FOCUS SENTENCE (a topic sentence) THREE (3) PIECES OF SPECIFIC EVIDENCE (DETAILS) FROM THE TEXT THREE EXPLANATIONS THAT FOLLOW EACH PIECE OF EVIDENCE CONCLUSION
