3 Conditional sentences We use conditional sentences when we want to say that something is the consequence of or depends on something else : the condition the consequence If it rains I will get wet. The if clause can come first or second in a sentence. We use conditional sentences when we want to say that something is the consequence of or depends on something else : the condition the consequence If it rains I will get wet. The if clause can come first or second in a sentence.

4 We use the zero conditional when we are talking about things that are generally true all the time. In this type of conditional we use the present simple in both clauses: If you heat wax it (always )melts. The dog runs away if we leave the door open. If you give my dog a bone, it buries it.

5 We use the first conditional when we are talking about something that may happen in the future. In this type of conditional sentence, we use will for the consequence clause with the if clause in the present simple. If I lose my job, I will emigrate. 6 We use the second conditional to talk about the consequence of impossible events in the present or future. The verb pattern is past simple in the if clause and would+Infinitive in the consequence clause: If I had much money I would go on holiday.

7 The third conditional is used to express the imagined consequences of something that did not happen in the past. We use the past perfect in the if clause, and would have+past participle in the main clause: If I had come on time she wouldn’t have left.
