6.5 A know that an element is a pure substance represented by chemical symbols. ELPS: 3D Activity Review HW assigned Friday(whole group). Student listen, speak, read, and write all vocabulary for this unit by following power point presentation. Students create vocabulary cards individually for binder. WARM-UP “Do Now”- Students read Matter Reading and answer the assigned question from the reading. I check each students open response for understanding and proper grammar. Homework: collect homework assigned Friday. Essential Question What is matter? What are the building blocks of matter? Assessment Check students vocabulary cards from power point. I check each students open response for understanding and proper grammar. Activity Students watch Discovery Education video (17:20min) on matter and its properties. Students take pre-test followed by a video quiz. Class discussion questions follow for deeper understanding. Time permitting, students may begin homework assignment on matter. Homework: Assign Gonzalez family reading on matter. Essential Question What is matter? What are the building blocks of matter? Assessment Video quiz and discussion questions that follow. 6.5 A  know that an element is a pure substance represented by chemical symbols. ELPS: 3D WARM-UP “Do Now”- Students read Matter Reading and answer the assigned question from the reading. I check each students open response for understanding and proper grammar. Briefly discuss today’s date and it’s importance. Activity In pairs, student should place cards into two sections, Matter or Not Matter. Students should explain the rule or reasoning used to make their choices. I circulate around the room to evaluate misconceptions to address throughout the lesson. (SpEd and ELL Modification - Sentence stems can be provided to start student discussion. Place laminated cards and adhere to desks or display on projector or document camera. As teacher circulates, students should be encouraged to use the sentence stems in their responses/discussion. Activity Review language of science vocabulary handout for student binders, explain importance of learning little words then big scientific ones. Students view chemical symbols power point and answer questions during presentation. Students then practice with a partner matching chemical symbols with the use of matching cards. Time permitting students may begin on homework assignment for tomorrow on Structure of molecules and ATOMS family with partner.
