Types of Evolution

BW HAVE SLATE, MARKER & ERASER OUT!!! Have HW paragraphs open on desk You are in a large empty room with a rough cement floor. You’ll be let out in 3 days. You have only a standard broom in your possession. In 5 minutes a trap door in the ceiling will open and a velociraptor will drop in. 1. In 3-4 sentences, explain what you will do to prepare for your hungry guest. 2. Review front page of evolution notetaker when finished

Evolution Evidence Stations Name on handout Head to lab table to work with partner 10-15 minutes Finished early? Study for natural selection quiz (it will be written, not matching)

Your Mission for Today Learn three types of evolution well enough to correctly choose the labels for diagrams representing each type.

Types of Evolution Divergent Evolution Convergent Evolution Coevolution

6. Divergent Evolution = Speciation One species may “split off” from another. The first species may or may not continue. This is often shown with tree-like diagrams.

Something has come between us. You’re so different now. I just can’t see us mating. Sniff, we used to be so alike. 

Video Example Icons of Science: Evolution 13:32-14:33 How are the California salamanders an example of divergent evolution? California Salamanders: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCoEiLOV8jc

7. Convergent Evolution =Similar adaptations Different ancestors evolve similar physical forms, by adapting to the same kind of environmental pressures (same niche) in different places. They do not become alike by interbreeding or sharing genes.

For example: IchthyosaurDolphinMarlin a reptile (extinct) a mammal a true fish 3 animals with very different ancestral backgrounds that ended up with very similar body designs. How many similarities can you spot on these powerful aquatic predators?

Video Example Icons of Science: Evolution 15:06-15:19 How are your canine teeth an example of convergent evolution? Canine Teeth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntVI4N7AUx0

8. Coevolution = two (or more) species develop together by living in a close relationship with each other for a long time. Their relationship shapes their adaptations and evolution. 8. Coevolution = evolved together

Example: Hawaiian honeycreepers and the fuschia flower have coevolved to have the same curve. The curved beak fits perfectly, pollinating a flower that other birds cannot access. The flower gets a dedicated pollinator, and the bird gets an exclusive source of nectar

Video Example Icons of Science: Evolution 15:06-15:19 How did the wasp & flower coevolve? Wild Orchid Wasp & Pollination http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h8I3cqpgnA

Cover your notes. Name the 3 types of evolution we discussed today Name the 3 types of evolution we discussed today List them on your slate List them on your slate

Closure: Divergent Convergent Coevolution Put the correct diagram next to each of the three types of evolution on your slate (list)
