1. Intermediate Unit 1 Academic Competition April 1, 2009 Natali Performance Center California University of Pennsylvania Serving All Learners In Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties

2. Purpose: Have every Intermediate Unit represented in the annual Pennsylvania State Academic Competition in the Senate and House of Representatives Chambers in Harrisburg. Select a Pennsylvania High School Academic Team for the National Academic Competition at Disney World, Orlando, FL. Conduct a feeder academic competition program on a regional basis.

3. Intermediate Unit 1 Has 4 Regional Academic Leagues In Operation: 1. Charleroi Area Academic League 2. Mt. Pleasant Academic League 3. Southwestern Academic League 4. Tri County Academic League

4. Structure and Operation Of Leagues: Each Academic League is comprised of high school level academic teams of academically gifted and talented students and coaches. High school teams in each league compete with one another within their local league from September through February. At the end of each league competition season, a winner is named in each league based on a point system of scoring. During March, the 4 winning league teams are invited to a double elimination play-off competition conducted by Intermediate Unit 1.

6. Structure: The Intermediate Unit 1 Academic Competition follows the same structure, scoring, and questioning as the State Competition. The winner of the Intermediate Unit 1 Academic Competition is then registered as IU1’s official entry for the State Competition held each April in Harrisburg. The IU1 representative high school team /coach is sent to the State Competition with funding support from National City Foundation and IU1.
