Improving the world through engineeringwww.imeche.orgImproving the world through engineering 1 Regional Strategy Board Meeting 16 th September 2014 Manifesto 2015 Let’s make Engineers’ voices heard in Government

Improving the world through engineeringwww.imeche.orgImproving the world through engineering 2  What should government be doing?  Engineers are at the heart of a healthy, strong and modern economy.  We have to make sure political parties realise this, and that the voice of engineers is heard loud and clear.  There is a lot that Government needs to do in order to boost the country’s engineering sector. The scale of the challenge is huge.  UK engineering companies are forecast to need 1.86 million people with engineering skills by 2020 to give our country any chance of sustainable growth for the future. Stephen Tetlow’s Initial Call for an Engineering Manifesto from the IMechE

Improving the world through engineeringwww.imeche.orgImproving the world through engineering 3  But with the ageing workforce and so many retiring from engineering, we are seeing little or no growth at all.  We run the real risk that the necessary improvements and upgrades to the UK’s infrastructure won’t happen.  We need to at least double the number of engineering apprentices and graduates the UK produces.  The UK’s engineering skills base is now facing the cliff-edge, and if do not tackle the problem, investment will start flowing away from the UK. Stephen Tetlow’s Initial Call for an Engineering Manifesto from the IMechE

Improving the world through engineeringwww.imeche.orgImproving the world through engineering 4  Members were asked to submit proposals under 500 words before 31 July 2014.  Members could submit more than one proposal, and were encouraged to categorise them under one of the Institution’s five strategic themes: 1.Energy 2.Environment 3.Education 4.Manufacturing 5.Transport Initial Call for a Member Input

Improving the world through engineeringwww.imeche.orgImproving the world through engineering 5  After the successful stage-one consultation in July to create our member-led Manifesto, we have identified more than 80 separate proposals from the hundreds of submissions. The IMechE are now putting the 20 most popular proposals to a member vote.  See the list on a separate sheet hand-out.  Note: Proposals have not been ranked in any order of priority or popularity.  In the Voting Page on the Website, Members are requested to vote for the proposal they believe to be most critical to the profession. Call for Member Vote Based on the Initial Submissions

Improving the world through engineeringwww.imeche.orgImproving the world through engineering 7  Although this is not a formal part of the consultation process; it is supported by Stephen and the straw poll information from the Regional Chairs will be considered.  Divide into 2 groups, allocate a spokesperson/chair and debate amongst yourselves what you believe to be the critical topics.  You can choose, for the purposes of this exercise, more than one topic, but it is suggested that you rank in order of importance.  Stick your choice/choices on the flipchart sheet, with any notes as to why, that is relevant to your region.  We then convene back and the spokesperson/chair of each group presents the findings of the group the meeting.  The results and findings will be relayed back to Stephen RSB Meeting Group Exercise

Improving the world through engineeringwww.imeche.orgImproving the world through engineering 8  Once completed the Manifesto Document will from a key part of our Strategic Objective:  SO3: Provide expert leadership to Government, Industry, Members and the informed public on Engineering.  The Regions and Areas can use this document to engage influencers in Local and National Government and structure events and debates around this. Potential Use of the Manifesto in the Regional Events
