Codes, Peers and Mates Media processing meets future networks EU Workshop on thematic priorities in Networked Media Brussels January 19 th 2010 Ebroul Izquierdo Head of Multimedia & Vision Group Queen Mary University of London

Slide 2 Statement Networked media and Future Internet is moving towards a combination of available (SotA) and new technology Research should focus on Emerging innovative ideas and approaches Integration of these with available techniques and paradigms The following are four SotA and emerging technologies that should be considered when defining thematic priorities in Networked Media Network Coding Scalable Coding Peer to Peer Social Networks

Slide 3 Thematic priorities in Networked Media Intelligence at network nodes Scalable content coding Considering social connections and implications Facilitating P2P communications Temporal scalability Combined scalability SVC Scalable bit stream Spatial scalability Quality scalability

Slide 4 Intelligence at the nodes Current nodes (routers) just store and forward packets There is almost no “processing” at intermediate nodes Information-theoretic limits can be overcome by allowing nodes to perform non-trivial operations on packets Network coding : puts more “intelligence” at the nodes execute coding operations on content, in addition to routing enables new communication systems architectures a very promising approach for re-designing future networks and substantially improve their performance allows trade-off communication capacity against comput. costs It brings significantly benefits in terms of throughput, reliability and fault tolerance

Slide 5 The Internet Network bottleneck

Slide 6 The Internet with Network Coding + = O = - = -

7 Scalable content coding adaptable to: heterogeneous networks dynamic traffic end user devices

8 Social P2P technology Social network analysis Mapping and measuring relationships and flows between people, groups, organizations, etc. The nodes in the network are the people or groups The links show relationships P2P networking protocols BitTorrent, Tribler

9 Temporal tag integration (learning) Temporal generalization (tag a frame given tagged neighboring frames) Temporal segmentation (into tag-based shots) With added value services/applications

Slide 10 Conclusion In defining thematic priorities in Networked Media, a combination of available (SotA) and new technology should be considered Research should focus on emerging innovative ideas and their combination with available techniques and paradigms Thus, thematic priorities in Networked Media should include Network Coding Scalable Coding Peer to Peer Social Networks
