New approaches to Materials Education - a course authored by Mike Ashby and David Cebon, Cambridge, UK, 2007 © MFA and DC 2007 Unit 12. Using CES in research: editing and creating databases

© MFA and DC 2007 Outline: CES Constructor Constructor lets you Edit a record Add a new record Add new fields to a record Create entirely new databases, on which the search engine operates Definitions A Database contains one or more Data-tables A Filter limits the records that can be accessed A Form formats the screen display and printout of a record Records in one table are related to those in another by Links

© MFA and DC 2007 Opening a database in Constructor File management toolbar File Edit View Database Tools Weblinks …… Open CES Constructor New database Open database Close database ……….. Select, locate and open Demo database Toolbar Database Tables MaterialUniverse ProcessUniverse References Demo database + + +

© MFA and DC 2007 Opening a data-table for editing …. Toolbar Database Tables MaterialUniverse ProcessUniverse References Double click on TABLE to open Expand and locate record for editing The FILTER determines which folders and records appear Table: MaterialUniverse Ceramics and glasses Hybrids: composites etc Metals and alloys Polymers and elastomers MaterialUniverse + + + + File Edit View Database Tools Weblinks …… Demo database + + +

© MFA and DC 2007 Editing a record Part of record for Aluminum alloys All fields can now be edited Density has been entered in wrong units: replace by 2500 - 2900 Closing Constructor saves the changes The FORM determines the layout and content of the file 25002900

© MFA and DC 2007 Unit 12: the main points Constructor lets you Edit a record Add a new record Add new fields to a record Create entirely new databases, on which the search engine operates Data can be added by hand or read-in from Excel spread-sheet

© MFA and DC 2007 Demo

© MFA and DC 2007 Take-home exercises: editing a database 12.1 Edit data-error in Trial database  Open Trial database in CES – observe data error in Aluminum record (Density factor 1000 too small).  Open Trial database in Constructor. Double click on MaterialsUniverse to open  Locate Aluminum on tree  Correct Density to 2500 – 2900 kg/m 3

© MFA and DC 2007 Take-home exercises: adding a new record 12.2 Add a record for the amorphous alloy Vitraloy 1  Open Trial database in Constructor. Double click on MaterialsUniverse to open, as in Exercise 6.1  Right-click on MaterialsUniverse and select New Record  Name the record Vitraloy 1, select a color and insert the record into all filters  Insert data Name – Vitraloy 1 Image – copy from file Density 6100 – 6200 kg/m 3 Price 17 – 29 $/kg Young’s modulus100 – 105 GPa Yield strength 1740 – 1760 MPa  Insert links to ProcessUniverseDie casting ReferencesASM metals handbook  Close Constructor and open Trial database in Selector to check that record exists and contains the data

© MFA and DC 2007 Take-home exercises: adding a new field 12.3 Add a new field to materials records: Flexural strength  Open Trial database in Constructor. Double click on MaterialsUniverse to open, as in Exercise 6.1  From Database in File menu open Table properties / Attributes  Insert New attribute:Flexural strength TypeRange UnitsMPa (Apply / OK)  Insert Image (on disk) (must be BMP format, about 10 x 10 cm)  Insert the new field into the Form: Click on Database / MaterialUniverse / Forms Open Forms / Right click Edu Level 1 / Edit form Find Flexural strength in right hand box / Add to Form Move it through form with Move up / Move down  All records now have a new field Flexural strength MPa
