3 What Do I Need to Make Sure is in My Thesis? O Purpose(s) O Strategies O In other words… O What does the speaker do?/What is his/her goal? O How does the speaker do it?/How does s/he accomplish it? O NOTE: Your thesis statement MAY be up to two sentences, but be sure to avoid laundry lists of devices.

4 Working Thesis Rubric O Unapproved "Be" verbs (students who have not cleared a "be" verb in the thesis with me) = -50 points each O 1st- or 2nd-person pronouns = -50 points each O Contractions = -50 points each O Missing purpose = -50 points O Fragment or Run-on = 0 O Sentence that does not make sense = 0 O Students can rewrite and resubmit their thesis statements for a 75.

O For Harry Truman Speech: O By providing his audience with an idea of the history and potential future of atomic technology, Truman works towards support for the use and maintenance of the atomic bomb.

8 Problematic Thesis Statements… O Sagan argues against the use of nuclear weapons and the continuance of nuclear technology. O Root used stereotypes and other fallacious arguments. O Anthony explains why women should have the right to vote, and she laments how sad it is that they can’t.
