3 What is Heart Disease? ► Heart disease is any kind of illness that effects your heart ► Most types of heart disease can be fatal ► Heart disease can be caused by stress, a family history, obesity, diabetes, viruses, tobacco smoke, and alcohol

5 Heart Attack  A heart attack is an injury to the heart muscle caused by a loss of blood supply  Symptoms include: Pressure or a squeezing pain in your chest, pain extending all around your body, shortness of breath, sweating, and fainting  People at risk for heart attack shouldn’t smoke  Call for help right away if you have a heart attack

6 Heart Failure Heart Failure occurs when your body can’t pump enough blood to meet your body’s needs Conditions such as coronary artery disease can gradually weaken your heart, leading to eventual heart failure Symptoms include: fatigue and weakness, shortness of breath while lying down, persistent wheezing, and lack of appetite People who drink or have high blood pressure are at higher risk for heart attack

7 Endocarditis Endocarditis can occur if you have had another type of heart disease in your life Endocarditis can occur if you have had another type of heart disease in your life Symptoms include: fever, weakness, aching joints or muscles, paleness, persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, blood in urine, tenderness in your spleen Symptoms include: fever, weakness, aching joints or muscles, paleness, persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, blood in urine, tenderness in your spleen People who have had another type of heart disease are at a higher risk for endocarditis than people who haven’t People who have had another type of heart disease are at a higher risk for endocarditis than people who haven’t

8 One Day Diet Breakfast: One Banana, One cup of Orange juice Lunch: Two Peanut Butter Sandwiches, One cup of Milk Dinner: One Fish, Twenty pieces of broccoli, Orange juice or Milk Snacks: Apple, Almonds, Blueberries

9 Nutrient Info  Foods that contain a lot of Vitamin C and Vitamin E are healthy if you have a heart disease  Avoid foods that are high in sodium or in fats

10 Treatment  Most heart disease requires surgery for treatment  Some antibiotics can help with heart disease, such as aspirin
