Answer the following questions:  What makes a human HUMAN?  What is the difference between a human and other animals?  How would this question have been answered by people who lived 100-200 years ago?

4  What effect does a person’s attitude have on their behavior?  What effect does a person’s attitude have on their mental and emotional health?  After reading the article on Optimism and Pessimism write a brief response:  How does the message of this article apply to you as a student?

11  Without using your notes try to answer the following questions based on yesterday’s lesson. This quiz is formative, that is, it should tell you how well you are learning. It will not be scored for assessing you yet. It is practice.  Describe the location of the Parietal, Temporal and Occipital lobes (three points)  What does each of these lobes do? (three points)

12  Score yourself one point for each correct answer for a total of 6 points. On your notecard tell me how many points you scored.  Parietal Lobe: Located in the middle and the top of the head. Contains the sensory strip and is responsible for physical sensation.  Temporal Lobe: Located on the side of the head, near the ears. Responsible for some memory and speech and hearing functions.  Occipital Lobe: Located at the back of then head. Responsible for processing visual stimuli (seeing).

14  Cerebral Cortex:  The Upper Brain, responsible for cognitive processes (thinking)  Limbic System:  The “reptile brain,” responsible for body function  Amygdala  Responsible for social/sexual behavior, adding emotions to memories.

15  You will have 5 minutes to finish yesterday’s brain drawing assignment. Please take it out and start working on it.

16  Describe the function of the following brain parts:  Thalamus  Hypothalamus  Hippocampus  Medula  Cerebellum  Pons  Reticular Activating System

17  Thalamus: the brain’s relay station  Hypothalamus: basic body needs and some emotions like anger.  Hippocampus: learning and long-term memory  Medula: Brain stem – controls basic body function like breathing and heart rate  Cerebellum: controls balance and motor function  Pons: the bridge, regulates sleep.  Reticular Activating System: alertness control center, controls body’s activity level.

18  Please take out your notes and begin to review for tomorrow’s quiz. Tomorrow you will have an actual quiz on brain parts and their functions.
