Do Now activity 8/4/15  Turn in your interest inventory to the appropriate bin. If you have your signed syllabus, tear off the back page and turn it in to the bin also. On a piece of scrap paper, write down what procedures or rules you remember from yesterday.

Academic Expectations MLA Header, Peer Review, Self-Editing, and Class Discussion.

MLA Header Student Name Teacher Name Class Date (Day Month Year) Assignment Title John Smith Ms. Stewart Adv. Language Arts 3 August 2015 Very Important Essay

MLA Format  Typed (not handwritten)  Large assignments only  Double spaced  1 inch margins  Paragraphs indented  Page numbers in right hand corner with last name.

Tips for Self-Editing  Print out the essay  Read the essay out loud  Read it to a parent or friend  Read it multiple time:  1 st time: Check for logic and reasoning  2 nd time: Check for word and sentence flow  3 rd time: Check for spelling and grammar errors  4 th time: Check for formatting errors.

Peer Review  Talk to the writer.  What are your intentions with this paper?  What point are you trying to prove?  Read one time through without writing anything down.  Read a second time for reason and understanding.  Point out where the supports are strong and where they need more.  Focus on the “big stuff” during this time.  Read again for grammar, spelling, and format errors.  Write a final, summative letter to the writer.  What worked? What didn’t? What changes do you recommend?  Be specific.  Be honest but polite.

Class Discussion  PARTICIPATE!  Use the questions as a guide, not a mandate.  If you spark a debate, keep it going.  Share the roles of “talker” and “listener.”  Think before you speak.  You can even write down your thoughts to help form them.  Use textual evidence.  Be respectful!
