Back and forth in time: Online news archives and presence as transportation

Presence and the Past  Presence (Lombard and Ditton, 1997) provides an explanation of six modes of media engagement effects.  Presence as transportation best explains the use of Web 2.0 technologies such as streaming and sharing video to interact with online news archives.  “You are there” – taking the viewer back in time to the event being reported.  “It is here” – taking the content forward in time to audiences not included in the content’s original purpose as news.

A 50-Year Time Journey  On Nov. 22-25, 2013, CBSNews.com presented an online video stream of the network’s breaking coverage and aftermath of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, EXACTLY as viewers saw it on Nov. 22-25, 1963.

The Mediated Moment

Stream of the Century  British Pathé Ltd. is an independent archive and the descendant of one of the major newsreel producers for theaters and cinemas in the twentieth century.  In April 2014, the company announced it was putting its entire news archive – more than 85,000 videos – online as a YouTube channel.

“We Are British Pathé”

The Future of the Past  Archive building – local and global – continues  Future technology issues  ISOJ as collective memory?
