Kitchen Safety Lab

What is wrong? Pets – should not be allowed in the kitchen and certainly not while you are cooking. Kitchen Bin – should have a lid and should be emptied regularly as bacteria can breed inside them. Electrical Sockets – don’t overload Crockery Piling Up – dirty pans can soon become a breeding place for bacteria. Wash straight away. Microwave – never use metallic items or cutlery inside

Chip pans –can pose a major fire risk. Never fill more than 1/3 rd full of oil. Pans – turn the handles of saucepans so that they don’t stick out; otherwise they can be jogged and the contents spilled. Tea Towel – keep well away from hot appliances Oven Door – don’t leave open as it is unhygienic and dangerous. Cigarette – should not be put down anywhere other than in an ashtray. It is best not to smoke in a kitchen.

Electrical cables – watch out for dangling ones. With a kettle the whole thing could be dragged off the worktop and the hot water inside can scald. Drawers – left open can injure you if you walk into them. Kitchen Floor – needs to be kept clean and dry to maintain hygiene and reduce the risk of accidents Extention Cables – avoid using Toaster- don’t put near curtains or blinds and remember to clean out the toaster regularly.

What are the 16 general kitchen safety rules? Before you begin roll up long sleeves, tie back long hair and remove loose clothing that might get in the way or catch on something. Wash your hands and dry them well. Wet hands can be slippery. If you can’t quite reach the top cupboard, use a sturdy stool or wooden step to help. Keep cabinet doors and drawers closed so you won’t bump into them,

Wipe up spills as soon as they happen.Wet spots can be slippery. Always use oven mitts to handle food on the stove, in the microwave and under the broiler. When working with pots on the stove, be sure to hold the handle while stirring to prevent the pot from skipping off the burner. Always pick up knives by their handle and do not point them at anyone. Be sure to only use a knife when an adult is close by and with permission.

Keep electrical cords away from the stove top, oven and sink. Before leaving the kitchen, check that the oven and burners are all turned off. If you burn yourself, tell an adult immediately. Don’t put knives or other sharp objects in a sink of full water. Someone could reach in and get hurt.

Never put water on a cooking fire – it could make the fire bigger. Call for an adult to help and use baking soda or flour to put the fire out. Don’t put cooked food on an unwashed plate or cutting board that held raw food. Always use a clean plate. Never add water to a pan with hot oil in it. It could splatter and burn someone. Keep paper towels, dish towels and pot holders away from the stove top so they don’t catch on fire.

Electrical Appliances NEVER touch an electrical appliance with bare hands. NEVER pull on electric cords. NEVER put a metal utensil into a toaster that is plugged in.
