2 2 Symbiotic Cognitive Systems Human decision making is highly imperfect Tversky and Kahnemann established that well-informed and intelligent humans are subject to surprising cognitive biases and gaps in rationality that can lead to incorrect inferences and suboptimal decisions Aim of SCS is to build multi-agent systems that augment the cognition of individuals or groups of people Enable human-agent teams to collectively perform cognitive tasks better than humans or software agents can alone, especially in the realm of large-stakes decision making First testing ground Cognitive room outfitted with cameras, kinects, microphone arrays, wands, etc. Multi-agent system running on Watson Platform Next ~3 prototypes, including Mergers and Acquisitions

4 4 A few points It is vital to keep our work honest by building real systems for real people People: They are not merely non-silicon entities that generate utility functions that drive self-aware systems Systems: We need much more work on understanding systems of self-aware entities The individual agents in our M&A prototype are not self-aware yet I believe this will happen within the next 1-2 years Current focus on basic capabilities rather than self-management But I think we are already exhibiting characteristics of collective self-awareness Self-organization and self-configuration supported via lifecycle manager
