A tall tale is a folktale that contains exaggeration about characters and events. Tall tales were made popular in the United States when early settlers faced the tremendous challenge of the new land.

Heroes Most heroes of tall tales were real people who displayed heroic acts and deeds. As the stories were told again and again they were exaggerated.

Heroes Eventually, the characters became bigger than life and they became fictional with each retelling of the stories.

Three Main Elements in a Tall Tale Character Setting Hyperbole

Characters Tall tale characters are different from other characters because their traits are more exaggerated.

Setting The setting in a tall tale comes from the specific experiences from the people who lived in that particular time and place.

Hyperbole Tall tales use hyperbole, an extreme exaggeration of events that happen in the story. The exaggeration usually creates a situation that is impossible and funny.

Tall Tale Heroes Johnny Appleseed, Davy Crocket, Pecos Bill are some of America’s tall tale heroes that inspired and shaped the art of oral history and helped the people of the American Frontier settle an unsettled territory. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoG94ieN828&featur e=related
