4 10 Basic Responsibilities 1. Determine the organization's mission and purpose. 2. Select the chief executive. 3. Provide proper financial oversight.

5 10 Basic Responsibilities 4.Ensure adequate resources. One of the board's foremost responsibilities is to provide adequate resources for the organization to fulfill its mission. 5.Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability. 6. Ensure effective organizational planning.

6 10 Basic Responsibilities 7. Recruit and orient new board members and assess board performance. 8. Enhance the organization's public standing. The board should clearly articulate the organization's mission, accomplishments, and goals to the public and garner support from the community.

16 Foundation and corporate fund raising Identify people you know Be sure there is research of “fit” Staff make the first contact and submit proposal Be sure grant maker’s staff know of your intent to contact Contact quickly

18 Ways to raise $100 - $5000 Write a personal check Host a dessert party at home or business for 20 friends and relatives Send a letter to 10 friends and relatives Volunteer to match other board members’ contributions if everyone gives Give significant gifts with other board members and write others together
