1 Major Art Modality Utilized: Visual Art Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Logical/Mathematical, Visual/Spatial Lesson Abstract: Students will become familiar with the art of MC Escher. Students will create an original tessellation. Materials Needed: MC Escher- Tessellation PowerPoint, computer, projector, examples of artwork by MC Escher, 12” X 18” paper, 4” square cardstock, pencils, erasers, scissors, tape, crayons, markers, painting supplies Procedures: Show and discuss Power Point. Demonstrate how to cut and slide, flip, and or rotate pieces, then attach with tape. Ask for suggestions on what the shape looks like. Add details. Trace shape to demonstrate how they fit together. Students begin with their own square. Encourage them to only slide their cut-out piece if they have trouble understanding. Peer tutoring is helpful for those who are confused. Students continue tracing their shape as they fit it together until their paper is filled. Students cover the pencil lines by tracing over them with a sharpie or other black permanent marker. Students use their choice of medium available to color their shapes. Instruct them to make sure that they do not color any neighboring shapes the same color, other than that any color scheme may be used. Students fill out their rubric and discuss their art with their classmates. Standards Addressed in this Lesson: M5P4. Students will make connections among mathematical ideas and to other disciplines. VA5MC.1 Engages in the creative process to generate and visualize ideas. c. Develops fluency, flexibility, and elaboration of ideas in the development of a work of art. VA5CU.1 a. Recognizes the unique contributions of contemporary and historical artists and art forms. VA5PR.1 f. Produces artworks emphasizing one or more elements of art (e.g. color, line shape form, texture). 4 How to Create A Tessellation Introducing M.C. Escher

5 This kind of art is called a tessellation. It is made up of a shape that fits perfectly together.

6 M.C. Escher Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is one of the world's most famous graphic artists. Apart from being a graphic artist, M.C. Escher illustrated books, designed tapestries, postage stamps and murals. He was born in the Netherlands. He was the son of a civil engineer. He is well known for creating a wealth of wonderful tessellations.

8 Begin with a square made of tag board. Follow these directions for creating your own tessellation.

9 Cut a wiggly line from the top left corner to the right top corner. Move the cut-out shape to the bottom of the box. Tape it carefully in place. This is called a slide. If you turn it over it is called a reflection. If you turn it around it is called a rotation. A slide is the easiest! (Warning: It can get confusing if you include reflections and rotations!)

10 Repeat the previous steps on the left side as follows: Cut out a wiggly shape starting at the bottom left corner and ending at the top left corner. Move the cut out shape around to the right side of the box. Tape it carefully in place. Remember…a slide is the easiest.

11 Look at your shape and see what it looks like to you then add lines to your shape to fill in details.

12 Fit your shapes together. Putting them in a row across your paper can make it easier.

13 Continue across your paper until you go off of the edges.

14 Put another row above or below.

15 Continue until your whole page is filled.

17 Color every other one if you want a checkerboard pattern.
